Mugs of Beer

What Wine Means To You?

‘Only wine can soothe our unhappiness.’ This is a ancient Chinese saying. Wine is always regarded as a ‘soul-pain killer’, but does it only mean that? I am quite an alcoholic although I never drink to get drunk, wine means lots for me.

Often, we drink when we feel depressed. When I feel very unhappy, I like to drink a bit. Wine cannot help solve problem, but when I drink a bit, I gradually feel a bit dizzy and too tired to think too much about the trouble. Wine can help me get a little rest from my stressful life, and this rest helps me to get back my energy to work and to tackle the problems.

When we are excited we drink. During celebrations and parties, we always have some wine, It is true that even if we don’t drink we can still feel excited, but undoubtedly, wine can help to push the atmosphere up and makes everybody having a blast during the parties!

We drink to make ourselves be brave. In many movies, the actors drink before they fight, this appears most in Chinese martial art movies. For many people, and for me, we drink when we have something we want to do but dare not to do usually. There are many daily examples to prove that.

For instance, one of my female friend has fallen in love with a handsome guy. She wants to tell him her feeling but feels too shy to act. One day, she was out for drink and when she was a bit drunk, she called the boy and told him everything! Now, they are a couple already. Wine sometimes acts as Venus!

We drink when we want to create a casual and friendly atmosphere. During many events, people have drinks to soothe the tense atmosphere and create a more friendly environment for people to know each other and make friends. Cocktail receptions, cocktail interviews, speed dating, orientation parties of universities and so on, they all have wine as a catalyst of fun-loving feeling. Without wine, the atmosphere will be much more stressful and tense.

Press and academics always object against the habits of drinking. No doubt, drinking too much harms. Drunk-drives, health problems, crimes and some psychiatric illnesses are brought about by alcohols. On the contrary, experiments prove that drinking a little bit each day keeps us healthy.

Drinking is not equivalent to errors, what really counts is how much you drink. No one should ever rely on wine to kill pain, physically or mentally, as they are just ‘pain-soother’ but not problem solution. Drink to make wine be good for you, but not to ruin you.
